Growing up, I was never the “fit chick.”  I was in sports because my parents put me in them, but I wasn’t the fastest, the most flexible, or the biggest point scorer.  I was (and am) a bit clumsy, not overly coordinated and just… awkward.  Unless it was in the swimming pool swimming laps, every other sport and activity it seemed I was just not cut out for.

After high school, when gym class and extracurricular activities became non existent, I honestly did not even notice their absence.  I worked and lived for a few years, A-okay with a lack of exercise and physical activity.  Waitressing and putting on all those miles on a nightly basis at a busy restaurant was treating me just fine, why go out and torture myself on purpose? I wasn’t unhappy with my weight or my size, so why bother, right?

Then it turned into… Walking a flight of stairs left me more winded than it should have.  I couldn’t carry in the water bottle for my water cooler without help…  Well that was no fun.

And so began my journey into creating a healthier lifestyle…

It wasn’t a New Year’s Resolution.  It wasn’t sparked by a big birthday or life event.  It was February 10th.  Well, February 9th I made the decision to start the next day.  It was my sister’s birthday, and after her celebratory birthday lunch, I drove straight to a city recreation centre, bought a punch pass, laced up my only-worn-once-before running shoes, and got to work.

I had NO CLUE what I was doing.  Tried to run a bit (died), tried out the elliptical a bit (died), then hopped on the bike for a few minutes (and died again).

Then I moved over to some weights.  There were only a few dumbbells at this particular centre, then a couple weight machines.

Using an app on my phone, I moved through a few exercises for a full body workout with some dumbbells and then tried every machine in the gym. Done.

A few months in, I started to (ever so slowly) feel more comfortable with this new routine.  I was researching workouts and looking up new healthy recipes; I went from eating midnight nachos and leftovers at work, to packing my own lunches, eating lots of veggies, juicing and meal prepping.  It was great.

And eventually, it was time to move to the big leagues.

A “real” gym.

Going to the community centre meant seeing the same 4 or 5 people every week, but having the majority of your workouts done alone. Going to an actual gym with so much more equipment, machines, weights, space and people was intimidating. But I was determined that it needed to be done in order to continue progressing and get the results I wanted to see.

I hired an online trainer even before stepping foot into that “real gym.”  I used it as fire to get into an actual gym with more equipment – I knew I couldn’t get to where I wanted with such limited options.  With his help, I began venturing WAY outside my comfort zone with my workouts, and started to learn more about nutrition to fuel the active lifestyle I was pursuing.

Fast forward a few years…

Being much more serious with my training routine, as well as with my nutrition; my passion for health and fitness took off.  I never thought that the lifestyle change I had made was difficult – it wasn’t  hard to follow, I never “fell off the wagon,” and I never had any moments of “screw this.”  It was changing my life.  I was becoming happier, more confident, and the interest to help others continued to grow.

I had friends asking me questions about working out, and what they should be eating, and everyone seemed to have one common complaint: It was SO complicated to weed through all of the misleading information out there!

It all sparked something in me.  I wanted to help these people – my friends, my family, my coworkers, to realize what was fact and what was a gimmick with all of the information they were being bombarded with, and help them realize that making a lifestyle change didn’t have to be confusing and difficult.  I was slowly finding my purpose.

I am the kind of person that researches things 100 times before implementation.  The problem is, there are many people out there who don’t share that habit.  They see a quick fix, think it’s going to solve all of their problems, and give er a go.

But that simply does not work. Those fad diets are not meant to be long term.  They dramatically cut calories or entire foods or food groups, while sometimes increasing your activity level to an amount that is not manageable long term – and they guarantee you weight loss.

And while, no, I have not tried any fad diets, so I have inevitably not found myself in a weight loss-rebound-gain cycle, I don’t have any less empathy for those who have.  I want to help people who are unsure of what direction to head in, and show them that it does NOT have to be like that! You can be healthy, and happy, and not miss out on life or feel deprived.  You CAN have long term results, without feeling overwhelmed.  It is a LIFESTYLE.  It’s all about creating healthy habits, and implementing those habits into your routine.  It’s about finding a way of life.

I began researching, and writing down everything I knew.  I have a love for cooking and baking, and began creating my own recipes altering classic meals and baked goods into healthier versions.  I didn’t know what I was going to do with all of this, but it made me happy, and I knew it was setting me onto the path towards my purpose.
